The Borough of Matawan owns and maintains 365 fire hydrants throughout the town.  Only Department of Public Works personnel or members of the fire department are permitted to open a fire hydrant  Private contractors may hook up to and use a hydrant only after written authorization has been provided by the Department of Public Works.
