Water at Lake Lefferts Safe for Recreation, Testing Confirms
The Borough of Matawan takes all matters related to public health and safety extremely seriously. In addtion to our regular testing of Lake Lefferts, following concerns raised of potential contamination at at the Lake, the Borough immediately coordinated with the Monmouth County Department of Health, our contracted public health provider, to ensure water testing was conducted promptly and thoroughly.
As part of our ongoing monitoring efforts, water samples were taken from three locations around Lake Lefferts and analyzed by JR Henderson Labs. On June 6, 2025, the Borough received confirmation from Peter-Donnell Boynton, Director of the Monmouth County Department of Health & Human Services and Chair of Monmouth ACTS, that:
“The results indicate that the bacterial levels at all three sampling locations are below the 200 CFU/100 mL threshold for freshwater lakes, meeting the established safety guidelines. Based on these findings, the water quality remains within acceptable limits, and no further action is required at this time.”
Given these results, the Borough has no current plans to close access to the lake or cancel scheduled recreational activities. We remain committed to continued monitoring and will take any necessary future steps should conditions change.
We thank residents for their advocacy and concern. The Borough will continue to keep the community informed and take proactive measures to protect public health.
