Court Upholds Denial of 24-7 Gas Station Route 79

Statement from Council President Gunn on Court Ruling Upholding Denial of 24/7 Gas Station at Broad Street & County Route 79

MATAWAN, NJ – The Borough of Matawan is pleased to announce that the courts have upheld the denial of a proposed 24/7 gas station and convenience store at Broad Street (Route 79) and Route 516 (Main Street). This decision reaffirms our commitment to responsible development that aligns with community values.

The Matawan Planning & Zoning Board carefully reviewed the application, considering extensive public input, and voted 6-1 on April 1, 2024, to deny the necessary zoning variance. Residents voiced concerns about traffic, safety, and the impact on our historic town.

As Chair of the Economic Development, Business & Redevelopment Commission, I commend the board’s diligence and our residents’ advocacy. Mayor Altomonte and borough officials have worked tirelessly to ensure Matawan grows in a way that respects our community’s wishes. This court ruling validates those efforts.

We remain committed to thoughtful development that enhances Main Street and respects surrounding neighborhoods, including Mount Pleasant Cemetery. I thank the many residents who participated in this process—your voices mattered. We welcome projects that contribute positively to Matawan but will not support those that fail to meet our standards. This ruling is a victory, reinforcing our dedication to smart development that preserves our town’s charm and quality of life.
