Borough of Matawan Statement on Lake Lefferts Water Safety
The Borough of Matawan takes the water safety questions raised by residents regarding Lake Lefferts extremely seriously and is actively monitoring the situation to ensure the health and well-being of our residents and visitors.
Following statements made by a resident at the June 3rd Council meeting, regarding an ongoing issue the Borough has been actively addressing for several months, we immediately renewed contact with the Monmouth County Department of Health, our contracted public health service provider, to follow up on testing already requested for the lake. Peter-Donnell Boynton, Director of the Monmouth County Department of Health & Human Services, provided the following response:“Our team should have results within 48 hours of this email. At this time, the County Health Officer does not advise that you put a warning or temporarily close access to the lake.”
Final lab results are expected by Friday, June 6th. In the meantime, the Borough continues to work closely with County health officials and will not hesitate to take additional action if necessary. Out of an abundance of caution, we are currently reviewing all scheduled recreational activities at the lake and will keep the public informed of any changes.
The safety of our community remains our highest priority. We appreciate the advocacy and concern expressed by residents and elected officials and will continue to provide timely updates as more information becomes available.
