Tax Sale – December 21, 2020

The Tax Collector is responsible for the billing, collection and reporting of taxes for all Borough properties. Property taxes are based on the Assessor's valuation of real property and are levied for the calendar year. The taxes for the Borough, regional school district and county purposes are combined into one that is apportioned on the tax bill by rate and amount for taxpayer information only.
Matawan Borough participates in an accelerated tax sale which will conclude on December 21, 2020. Any property with a tax, water, sewer or special charge balance as of November 13, 2020 is eligible for this sale. To avoid this sale, you must have all balances paid in full no later than December 18, 2020. The Tax Collector collected 99% (unaudited) of the total tax levy in 2018.

Taxes are due the first of February, May, August, and November and must be received in our office no later than the 10th calendar day. Interest will start calculating on all accounts that remain open after the 10th calendar day of month due. Interest is calculated at 8% per annum for balances under $1500 and 18% per annum for balances over $1500.
Any account with a $10,000 balance as of December 31st, will incur an additional 6% penalty. Please keep in mind, the Borough of Matawan participates in the accelerated tax sale program, therefore, any property with a tax, water or sewer balance as of November 11th, will be subject to tax sale by year's end.
Deductions are available for senior citizens, disabled persons, veterans, widows of veterans and permanently and totally disabled veterans. Please contact our office for the qualifications and application.
