NOTICE OF SALE OF PROPERTY FOR NON-PAYMENT OF TAXES,
ASSESSMENTS AND OTHER MUNICIPAL LIENS
Public notice is hereby given that I, Peggy L. Warren, Collector of Taxes for the Borough of Matawan in the County of Monmouth will sell in electronic sale and conclude on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at 9:00 o’clock in the morning in the Tax Collector’s Office, 201 Broad Street Matawan, New Jersey all lots hereinafter mentioned in fee for the lowest rates of interest, but in no case in excess of the statutory rate per annum for which any person or persons will agree to take the lands, together with interest to date of sale and costs of sale, that remain open for taxes for the year 2018 and prior and water/sewer as computed in the Tax Sale List pursuant to NJSA 54:5-19 to 54:5-111, and amendments thereto. Note: Payments made prior to the sale must include interest due on unpaid balances of current year taxes and other municipal charges. Taxes, water and sewer charges to be sold will be accounts that are open and delinquent as of November 14, 2018 and remain open at the time of sale. The lands sold for municipal liens may be redeemed at any time within six months from the date of sale if the municipality is the purchaser, or within two years of the sale when the purchaser is other than the municipality or at any time thereafter, until the right to redeem has been cut off in the manner provided in NJSA 54:5-1 et seq.
Industrial properties may be subject to the Spill Compensation and Control Act, NJSA 58:10-23.11 et seq., the Water Pollution Control Act, NJSA S8:10A-1 et seq., and the Industrial Site Recovery Act, NJSA 13:1K-6 et seq. In addition, the municipality is precluded from issuing a tax sale certificate to any prospective purchaser who is or may be in any way connected to the prior owner or operator of the site.
The payment for the sale shall be made before the conclusion of sale by cash, cashier’s check, certified check, or money order. The Borough of Matawan reserves the right to adjourn the sale. The names as shown may not be the present owners of said property. The land and premises to be sold are described as follows:
The Tax Collector is responsible for the billing, collection and reporting of taxes for all Borough properties. Property taxes are based on the Assessor's valuation of real property and are levied for the calendar year. The taxes for the Borough, regional school district and county purposes are combined into one that is apportioned on the tax bill by rate and amount for taxpayer information only.
Matawan Borough participates in an accelerated tax sale which will conclude on December 18, 2018. Any property with a tax, water, sewer or special charge balance as of November 14, 2018 is eligible for this sale. To avoid this sale, you must have all balances paid in full no later than December 14, 2018. The Tax Collector collected 99% (unaudited) of the total tax levy in 2017.

Taxes are due the first of February, May, August, and November and must be received in our office no later than the 10th calendar day. Interest will start calculating on all accounts that remain open after the 10th calendar day of month due. Interest is calculated at 8% per annum for balances under $1500 and 18% per annum for balances over $1500.
Any account with a $10,000 balance as of December 31st, will incur an additional 6% penalty. Please keep in mind, the Borough of Matawan participates in the accelerated tax sale program, therefore, any property with a tax, water or sewer balance as of November 11th, will be subject to tax sale by year's end.
Deductions are available for senior citizens, disabled persons, veterans, widows of veterans and permanently and totally disabled veterans. Please contact our office for the qualifications and application.
