Information About Lead in Drinking Water

Lead and copper are naturally occurring elements found throughout the environment. Lead can enter drinking water when service pipes that contain lead corrode, especially where the water has high acidity or low mineral content that corrodes pipes and fixtures.  The water that is produced by the Matawan Ground Water Treatment Plant and the surface water received from New Jersey American Water is pH adjusted and chemically treated to inhibit the corrosion of water services and plumbing fixtures that may contain lead.  The analytical results for the presence of lead in residential water samples throughout Matawan have consistently returned results below the maximum contaminant level for lead in drinking water.  The results can be reviewed by going to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protections Drinking Water Watch web page:  https://www9.state.nj.us/DEP_WaterWatch_public/

The following web page link will bring you the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Lead in Drinking Water web page:   http://www.nj.gov/dep/watersupply/dwc-lead.html
